India Grape Production: Top States, Climate & Soil Conditions

Grapes are one of the biggest fruit crops in the world and table grapes are the most often consumed fresh grapes. According to the International Organization of Viticulture and Oenology (IOVE), around 9.5–10 million hectares of vineyards have leveled off worldwide, producing 60–70 million metric tons annually. Only 10% of grapes are consumed fresh and 5-6% are dried, even though the bulk (80–90%) are used to make wine, juice, and processed goods.

India is the world's seventh-largest producer of grapes, and at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.10%, the grape industry is expected to grow from USD 215.17 billion in 2024 to USD 303.20 billion by 2029. Various weather conditions and sufficient soils enable grape farming in India, making the country a significant contributor to both internal consumption and exports.

India's Top Grape-Producing States

With almost 70% of the nation's grape production, Maharashtra is the top grape-producing state. The districts of Nashik, Sangli, Solapur, Pune, and Ahmednagar are the most important for grape production. With around 24.49% output in Vijayapura, Bagalkot, and Kolar, Karnataka comes in second. Though in lower amounts, grapes are also grown in other states including Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.

Grape Farming Climate and Soil Conditions

Climate: The ideal temperature range for grapes is 15°C to 35°C. Proper sunlight needed for healthy development and avoid too much rain and it causes fungal diseases.

Soil: Sandy loam, clay loam, or alluvial soil with having a pH of 6.5-7.5 are suitable. Good drainage is essential to avoid root rot.
